A little bit of rain didn't stop
a great day for golf

Special Olympics Annual Azalea Classic
A rainy day in May did not stop over forty Northern Virginia Special Olympic athletes from enjoying a day of golf and fun. When the weather promised to deliver buckets of rain outside, volunteers from Azalea Charities and the Piedmont Club set up a putting course inside the Piedmont Clubhouse. Athletes putted along gutters and across greens that spanned the facility through wood-paneled meeting rooms, hallways and locker rooms. Nearly a dozen professional golfers spent the day offering tips and demos. The staff at Wegmans provided a "cookie decorating break" with an array of frostings and toppings for the athletes to create their own treats. Everybody had a great time.
Azalea Charities sponsors this annual event that consists of a clinic for Special Olympic athletes. Part of the proceeds from the next few years will go to send Special Olympians to the 2011 World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.
